Frequently Asked Questions
Have you ever wondered about things connected with The Sauchieburn Centre, which you want to find the answer to, but thought it was a silly question to ask or have not had to courage to ask? We have developed a list of those commonly asked question, which are listed below.
What do volunteers actually do?
The main requirement is to prepare horses for classes, lead them during lessons and return them to their stable or field afterwards.
Do I have to be an expert with horses to volunteer at the RDA?
No. If you want to work with horses and do not know how, we will help you learn.
Do I have to be qualified in dealing with riders with disabilities or other related issues to volunteer at the RDA?
No. There is no need for special qualifications. Where there is a need for special expertise, this is supplied by qualified RDA staff.
Do I have to commit to giving a specific length of time to volunteering at the RDA?
No. Stable working hours are Monday to Friday 0800 to 2000 and Saturday 0800 to 1500. The jobs which require to be done during these hours are many and varied. Volunteers at Bannockburn currently give everything from 2 hours a week to in excess of 30 hours dependant on their own personal commitments.
How old do I have to be to volunteer?
You need to be at least 12 years old to be a volunteer. However there is no accident insurance until you are 14 years old.
Will I be expected to be proficient in what I will be doing as soon as I start?
No. You will have an induction meeting with our Volunteer Co-ordinator where he will find out your level of expertise. He will then be able to make sure that you have the correct support from other experienced volunteers or staff members to get you started.
If I have special needs myself can I still volunteer?
Yes. Many of our volunteers and staff members have special needs. Some of our staff and volunteers first came to Sauchieburn as special needs riders themselves.
Are all volunteers involved with horses?
No. There are many other things which need to be done that do not involve working with the horses.
